excellent game, but not fit for purpose Posted: 28 April 2008
Blokus Duo is a 2-person version of the excellent game Blokus. Blokus can only be played with 4 people, which can be a disadvantage if there aren't enough interested players around. Luckily, Blokus Duo works equally well as a game, also managing to elicit all the same competitiveness, conniving strategy, quest for domination, desire to thwart ones opponent and addicition to having to always play just one more game to try to level the scores!
The problem with Blokus Duo is the presentation and packaging. It's marketed as the travel version. Well, ours has never travelled further than from the living room to the kitchen table and after just three months, the box is weakening, the flimsy plastic storage trays have almost given out and one of the cute little playing pieces has vanished into the hoover. At times, various other pieces have gone AWOL but with concerted effort, we've managed to find them again. I would certainly not dare travel anywhere with this game. I will probably end up having to sew little draw-string storage pouches for the pieces - how tedious!
Addictive Anti-Tetris Game Posted: 29 January 2008
The aim of this game is, essentially to block your opponent off the board. Your pieces, in orange or purple, look like they came out of Tetris, each of your tiles being comprised of between 1 and 6 units.
Making sure your pieces touch corners with each other, you have to make it as hard as possible for your opponent to put their pieces on the board. Eventually as the game goes on, it reaches a point where either one or both players give up, and who ever has the least pieces left wins. As usual, a simple concept, executed smartly.
As mentioned in another review, the packaging is not great, the storage is flimsy and the feel is that of a toy which ought to be a travel toy, but isn't.
Having said that, I didn't buy it as a travel toy, so that doesn't bother me. Because there are very few rules to grasp, young children should be able to get involved, however they need to have a bit of a strategic head, and patience!
Great fun. Enjoyed by all the family from 8 to 73 Posted: 04 November 2006
Ideal for all the family. It only takes 10 minutes or so to play and everyone enjoyed it. It is an ideal game for travel, holidays and home especially when you want to play a short game. On holiday, the grandchildren got creative and made a league so everyone played each other and a prize was given to the ultimate winner - the one with the minimum score.
We love it Posted: 10 September 2006
We had seen the 4 player version in a games store in New Zealand and had it demonstrated. We didn't buy it because of luggage space, but when spending the last bit of currency at the airport, we bought this two player version.
All of us love it (ages 11, 13, 35, 37!) - we are getting very smart at it now! The game is part strategy and part luck. The object is to get more of your pieces onto the board by the end of your game than your opponent. Think tetris, with an evil, competitve edge!
Would highly recommend it, particularly as the game only lasts 10 - 15 mins.
